PROJECT STORY
Tracing House was an introductory assignment where we explored model making with a new material, plaster. We were challenged to design our own tracing house, which was a traditional space where architects drew life size segments of their church designs on a plaster floor. The large floorspace allowed them to detail every possible aspect of the unique vaults, or other features, from which carpenters would cut out templates and shape the stones. The form of my design resembles some of the vaults, windows, and symmetry found in churches of that time, while simultaneously maximizing natural light in the space. I also made sure to incorporate an operable viewing deck to allow occupants to take a look at their work from above. I was able to reuse much of the wood from the plaster form because the moisture it absorbed while the plaster set helped it bend into place.
